Web Eyes Local Review
Comment Magazine
22 June 1999 by Richard Heath
Heartlander is by no means the only local online service in Highland Perthshire, and there are significant commercial sites too. Surprising perhaps are the activities are Kinloch Rannoch which has Rannoch Net, a privately run local information site, and Cali net, a small but ambitious ISP (Internet Service Provider) based behind the Dun (Dunalastair Hotel).
Cali Net was launched on August 12th (1998) by Paul Edwards (alumnus of Rannoch School) and James Shearer as a dial up and web space service. However as the Internet environment mutates, they have extended their activities into a magazine site called Destinations in Scotland. Cali Net is also an agent for the Scottish portal site Scotland.com. Cali Net are offering what must be the best free ISP service, with web space and email addresses, including ISDN responding to a radical shake-up of how we pay for Internet access.
Cali Net are offering free connection to the Internet via a modem or ISDN (64k and 128k). Just fill in a form on their site and you should get unlimited time on the Internet plus 5 free email addresses plus 10 Mb web space. The only cost is the price of your “local” phone call. We will be trying this out this month. There are other services like this, some with free web space too but this one comes from Highland Perthshire, Scotland.
